K.I.S.S. – Keep it Simple, Stupid!
We’ve all heard this idiom a million times but, sometimes, we can get caught up trying to say too much in our advertising and marketing messaging which can result in K.I.S.S.-ing customers goodbye!
Today more than ever, brevity and succinctness are imperative in order to break through the clutter and actually reach your intended audience. With so much competition for clicks, eyeballs, attention, etc., people are becoming more and more adept at tuning out white noise and just focusing on what draws their attention.
A good example of how people want to consume information in small doses can be found on the ever-evolving digital frontier known as Web 2.0/Social Media. Late last year, popular social networking platform Twitter doubled its character limit for posts from 140 to 280. According to MarketingLand.com however, a very small percentage of Twitter users actually go beyond the previous character limit on a regular basis and prefer to stay under 140.
In more traditional forms of media, the brevity rule holds true as well. For radio and television, a recent study by MediaRadar found that ads are getting shorter and shorter the further we head into the digital age, with the number of national ads clocking in at 15 seconds or shorter having risen by 16% in the last year.
Clearly, concise is King.
Given that people obviously now want their messaging as quickly and succinctly as possible, your business’s’ messaging needs to reflect this in order to maintain relevance.
